With a dedicated yet small team working over time, some of the avenues they took to stay afloat blew me away – including housing the entire staff in Tony’s apartment, which was eventually sold to help keep the company alive. What I found truly amazing is the painstaking early days of Zappos who knew they were on to a good thing but were not making enough profit to survive. He talks about his success selling his previous company Link Exhange at a very young age to Microsoft for $265M before going on to invest in Zappos and eventually become CEO. So much so that in 2009 Zappos was listed as one of Fortune magazine’s top 25 companies to work for and Amazon acquired it later that year for over $1.2 billion.Īs I explain in my video book review this is a fun and easy read with loads of lessons delivered in a humorous style from a very humble yet passionate Tony Hsieh.
